This is an outtake from "New American Standards"
This one goes all the way back to May of 1996 when I was recording my "solo" stuff under the moniker Sugar Tones. I was fresh out of Lipscomb and before I got a job I just sat around writing songs and I recorded about a dozen or 16 on J Goodfred's 4-track, and then the @#$%ing thing ate the master tape and I had to redo all of them (well, I failed to re-record my techno version of the Cranberries' "Linger"). I’m hoping to get all of those songs up on this site one day. Anyway…I called this song "Rip Off" simply as a working title because I was "ripping off" the Velvet Underground's "There She Goes" (quite obviously) and the Cranberries' "Zombie" (in the outro). I always had a soft spot for this song (for reasons I won't go into) and wanted to play it out, but never had a band that I felt fit it until H&V came along. I think we played it at our first show and that was it...maybe a slowed down version at the first Bongo Java acoustic show. I don't know why it wasn't included with the album, but possibly Dave Spivey (producer and engineer of NAS who also plays the piano outro) didn't like the way it turned out.
