About Recording Bottom of the Stairs

From Facebook

In December of 1986, Two Pound Planet (then known as Urban Edge) entered the Sound Lab in Greensboro to record their first album. The lineup of Jerry, Jerry, Tom, and Jason was just 8 months old but they had built up a trove of songs to record. And record they did. 11 songs recorded in TWO days. And, well, it kind of sounds like it. Keep in mind that 30 years ago, ProTools didn't exist nor did home studios of any worth. Bands had to be well rehearsed and ready to get it right during the first or second take to save money. It was VERY expensive to make records then.

This song, penned by a 19 year old Jason Buss, truly shows off the band's love for the Paisley Pop Underground that was happening in Los Angeles at the time. Obviously, they were listening to The Three O'Clock A LOT.

Jason says he thought of the song while on a retreat during college. He had stayed up all night and was very tired. He said that standing outside of the house they were staying in, he looked up to the sky and could feel the early morning Earth turn. Duuuuuuuude!
If you think this is heady, wait until you hear a song he wrote 5 years later called "Imagination." Here is "Morning Earth Turn" from December 1986. This is off of the tape release of the album, "Bottom of the Stairs." So, the quality has a bit to be desired. The band doesn't know where the master tapes are. Listen to this and you'll know why.
